Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:
Intent
At Crampton Primary School, we aim to ensure that pupils engage with sport and enjoy what they are doing, to build a love of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. We aim to do this not only through taught lessons in the curriculum, but also through extracurricular activities. Through this enthusiasm and engagement, pupils will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for individual sports and physical activity.
We believe in the importance of teaching children a range of fundamental skills, during their years in Reception and Key Stage 1, so they have everything they require to participate in a range of sports whilst they are in Key Stage 2.
We know that sport can play an important part in developing children’s confidence and communication, and we want to promote this. We want our pupils to be confident in what they do, experience a wide range of sporting activities, and celebrate those achievements at all levels.
PE is led by both by a coach from Bacon’s College and Class Teachers, offering a variety of lesson approaches.
Implementation
Pupils at Crampton Primary School receive two hours of PE a week, in two one-hour sessions. Our curriculum offers children a wide range of different sporting activities including dance, gymnastics, basketball, athletics, cricket, and invasion games such as football and tag rugby. In Key Stage 1 children are taught the fundamentals of sport through multi-skills sessions.
Our school also provides pupils with the opportunity to take part in after school football and basketball clubs.
Our scheme of work has been designed by ‘The PE & School Sports Network’ at Bacon’s College in Southwark and specifically considers the needs of our pupils. It includes key vocabulary alongside skills and knowledge which is taught to pupils throughout lessons. Pupils also take part in PSHCE which focuses on a balanced lifestyle, mental wellbeing, and healthy eating.
In addition, we use sports to develop our pupils’ leadership. Pupils in Y6 are selected to use their skills and leadership skills to support sporting events like Sports Day. The children also have the opportunity to take part in sessions run by specialists, sometimes as a single event and sometimes through several sessions. These have included skipping and swimming.
Impact
Our pupils enjoy sport. We help motivate the children by engaging them in high quality activities that are fun and progressive. Our scheme of work builds on previously learnt skills to make sure that children develop their understanding of sport and that they can play an active role in all lessons. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. We monitor their progress in Physical Education through ongoing and summative assessments and equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
1. New Equipment
The school's PE budget and donations from the school community ensure we have a wide range of equipment for the children to use. Equipment is checked regularly to make sure that it is all in good working order, anything in need of repair is fixed and updated.
2. Lunchtime Games
It is not just during PE sessions that children develop their sporting skills and fitness. At playtimes, children play games and use the equipment with support staff. An increase in activities in our playground has led in a reduction of incidents.
3. Wrap Around Care
The school offers sports focussed enrichment activities that the children can take part in afterschool. Currently we offer:
4. Sports Day
All children work on their athletic technique throughout the year. At Crampton we organise two sports days to take place at Kennington Park during the summer term.
All children are encouraged to take part in the events including the parents!
The PE and School Sports Network has been based at Bacons College for over 12 years. Crampton joined as a non-member school in 2019 to introduce sports coaches to deliver a range of focussed activities to help develop children's skills. From September 2020 Crampton became a full network member.

Swimming is a statutory part of the National Curriculum. Therefore, swimming lessons are compulsory for all pupils.
At Crampton Primary School, pupils participate in Year 6.
The Castle Leisure Centre, Elephant and Castle, is used for lessons and fully qualified swimming teachers and lifeguards are employed.
In line with ASA (National governing body for swimming) guidelines pupils should wear appropriate costumes for swimming that confirm to safety, cultural and teaching requirements. It is important that swimming clothing is relatively tight fitting to minimise the effect of drag in the water. Pupils are required to wear a swimming hat and to remove all jewellery before entering the pool.
